The FedEx Arrow

I just noticed that there's an arrow in the FedEx logo.
Check out the whitespace between the 'E' and the 'x'.

It's a nice design. Although it took me 20 odd years to notice it, so maybe too subtle. (Or maybe that's just me.)

MAKE: Blog: HOW TO - Make plants talk! They'll Twitter you when they need to be watered (and more)...

I found this article linked from slashdot this morning. It's kind of a neat little gadget.

The concept of twitter, or microblogging in general, was kind of lost on me. Someone once described it as providing the answer to "how's it going?" to anyone that subscribes to your twitter feed. I didn't really understand why someone would subscribe to this stuff because I try not to ask this question if I can avoid it. Partially because I don't really care about the answer most of the time (and if I do care, I'll ask for more in depth details than a one-liner) and partially because the answer tends to be a fib most of the time.

Typical Conversation
Me: "How's it goin?"
You: "Not too bad."
Me: "Cool."

These guys though may have found a better use for the platform. I can't really ask a plant how it's doing -- the conversation tends to go nowhere. Adding this translation layer in between might actually be helpful.

Before
Me: "How's it goin?"
Fern: "..."
Me: "Fine, be that way. I was gonna offer you something to drink but nooooo... your leafy green stoicism will just have to wait."
Fern: "..."
Me: "I hope you die."

Now
Fern: "Heyo! Can I haz water?"
Me: "Yeah sure."
Fern: "Huzzah!!"

Of course, some people on the internet are bound to take the idea to strange places.

SXSW Showcasing Music Torrents

SXSW is an annual music festival held in Austin Texas. According to the SXSW website, the festival "showcases hundreds of musical acts from around the globe on over fifty stages in downtown Austin. By day, conference registrants do business in the SXSW Trade Show in the Austin Convention Center and partake of a full agenda of informative, provocative panel discussions featuring hundreds of speakers of international stature."

Apparently, they also make available a good portion of the music that is played at the event. It's legally downloadable via a torrent at SXSW Showcasing Music Torrents.

This year, they released 3.5 Gigs of downloadable music content. That's a lot of tunes.

Not sure how good the content is just yet, I've just started downloading it. According to my torrent client, I've got at least a day to wait.

Pimp my Rice Paddy

This stuff is pretty cool.

Each year, Japanese farmers construct rice paddy art by growing different coloured rice crops in their regular rice paddies.

These are incredible designs.
